Computer Shopping

I need help. I want to buy a laptop for grad school, but don't know what kind to get. I already have a desktop which works just fine, but I want portability. Since I have one PC, I'm kind-of wanting my laptop to be freeware, OS and all. Any ideas on either the laptop itself or the operation system? Any warnings or advise? Thanks!
